"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." Psalms 91:1-2
The very thought of rodeo brings adventure, rugged individualism, competition, and thrills to the average mind. Being the outstanding spectator sport of our country, exciting rodeo performances draw over 12 million fans and 25,000 contestants annually. Professional rodeos are held in over 750 locations across our country each year, culminating at the National Finals Rodeo in December.
Most observers see the color, the action, the danger, the win/lose competitive scenerio. Yet the pagentry, glitter and fame that surround professional sports belie the unique rat race that envelops rodeo contestants. Not seen are the injuries, the loneliness, the hopeless feeling that befalls many in a world where champions become forgotten has-beens overnight. A world of endless financial insecurity, an environment where marriages are low on the priority list, and relationships are squandered. Marking the journey for far too many are an endless searching for the rainbows end with drugs, alcohol, immorality, divorce and self indulgence.
Cowboys are a unique breed. They are expected never to complain, expected never to lose. They are highly independent, individualistic, part of a special subculture. Having been mocked by people with "real" jobs, they avoid contact with anyone else but a cowboy. It's the life they choose. It's not really a bad choice, but how can basic spiritual needs be met in an environment like this? Needs like purpose in life; dealing with uncertainty about the future; acceptance; eternity. Answers that everyone, cowboy or not, must come to grips with before the final appointment with death.
We are here to proclaim the Word of God, and to reach Rodeo Cowboys and Cowgirls with the Good News that Jesus loves them and Jesus saves. God has given us a heart for Rodeo folks and a desire to share the love of God with them. It is our desire to see people's lives changed, and we are firmly convinced that the only way for this change to take place is through the Word of God. We want to give God all the glory and we want people to know that God is there for them even when they are on the Rodeo Circuit.
